Approaching Harvest
We are in the process of finishing up the bottling of the 2007 Red Wines and just waiting for the Harvest. Once we finish bottling, all of the tanks will be empty and waiting for the new grapes from harvest.
Since harvest only happens once a year, much of the equipment goes unused for about nine months out of the year. As a result, we are working on pulling out all of the equipment for the crush season, cleaning it and greasing it up to make sure it is all in working order come the start of harvest.
Right now we are walking the fields and taking samples to measure the development of sugars and flavors. All of the grapes are looking promising so we are anticipating a successful Harvest! We hope to begin harvesting in three weeks. Come out to the vineyard and experience this exciting time of year with us during the ‘Rock the Harvest’ Festival on Saturday, September 26! Looking forward to 2009 wines!

This 12 day cruise will allow you to visit numerous wine regions along the Mediterranean while tasting the foods and sampling the wines unique to the region. Stops include Venice, Italy, Croatia, Sicily, France and Spain.
The cruise will set sail on May 25, 2010 aboard the six-star Crystal Serenity. With Pindar’s own winemaker as the host, Pindar Winery will receive exclusive group rates on this exciting and unique experience. We hope you’ll join us!
Your host, Les Howard, began his career as a cellar master over fifteen years ago. His unique and authentic wines have been influential in defining the ‘Long Island Style’ of wines. He is accomplished in a broad range of wine styles, creating lighter, food-friendly wines, as well as full-bodied wines that grow more elegant and complex with age. Les Hoard was noted to ‘bring an open, youthful, experimental style to his winemaking’ according to wine critic Michael Braverman. He was voted the ‘Best Winemaker’ in 2007 by Dan’s Paper Best of the Best Awards and has received numerous double-gold and gold medal awards.

Prepping for Harvest
Right now the vineyard is in the process of netting the whole vineyard to protect against the birds. With all of the gorgeous, dry, warm weather we have been fortunate to have, we are right on schedule. The grapes are starting to soften and the berries are nearing ripeness for harvest.
Our Champagne varieties are our earliest red varieties to get picked and right now they are at 40% veraison. The Merloy Cabernet is at 20% veraisons and as long as the weather stays at ninety degrees, they berries should ripen quickly.
Over the next few days we will begin walking the vineyard to sample the grapes and within the next two weeks we will perform Brix tests to measure the sugar concentrations of the grapes and find out which ones are most ripe. If all goes according to schedule, we are hoping to begin picking the grapes in three weeks.
With the start of berry picking, comes our busiest, yet most exciting time of the season. Once the picking begins, we don’t stop until all of the berries have been picked, which is usually around the first week of November. So for now, we will continue to sample the grapes, prep our harvesting machines and wait for the grapes to reach full ripeness so we can begin the harvest!

With the Winemaker
Which wines are showing well? Well of course they are all showing well!
This time of year our white wines, such as the Rieslings and Chardonnays, are most popular. With that in mind, we are currently bottling our 2008 white wines. We just released the 2008 Peacock Chardonnay and the 2008 Sauvignon Blanc. Bottling of the Winter White was just completed and within the next two weeks we hope to finish up all of our white wines and switch over to bottling the 2008 reds.
Our Sunflower Chardonnay is a particular favorite this time of year. This special reserve chardonnay was created from the ripest grapes, on our oldest vines, from a vineyard site of only 3.9 acres. The chardonnay is aged in 100% French oak with 60% Malolactic fermentation. The end product is crisp and balanced with a rich body and good acidity. The Sunflower chardonnay has lush tastes of vanilla and caramel, as well as subtle hints of apple and pear, making it the perfect complement for lobster or summer salads. Be sure to stop by the vineyard or visit our website to purchase your own bottle of this vintage chardonnay.
